Tis the season to be nostalgic, falalalallaa!

Its been one LONG year since my last visit to Damascus. And just around the holiday time, I become a little more in need to be there. I need to re-live last year's Eid between my loved ones and within the most special city to my heart on earth.

Eid here means mixed emotions. It's Eid, a celebration but also a suffocation. Every so often I have to remind myself why am here. At this point in my life, I see NO reason to keep me here anymore... or so I think.

Here... there's no traditional touch and unlike Ramadan, Eid is hard to maintain with spirit unless its on a weekend. Everyone has work! There IS no Eid! For those who could make it to Eid prayer, its awesome! Theres a 3-shift Eid prayer for the convenience of those who wish to pray. Sweets are passed outside and games are setup for the kids along with free gifts! But, when you have work and can't stick around, you come home at your usual time from work. You wait for non-existing people to come for a Eid visit and you end up eating the sweets you made yourself.

I want to go home!!! I want to wake up to that Damascene house filled with five families one filling every level and corner. I want to wash my face in the fountain centering our beautiful spacious home and throw jasmines into it. I want to rush into my abaya in the morning and hug all my cousins who are ALSO wearing abayas which we pre-planned to not have any matching colors for the big family breakfast. I want to relive those moments in my photo album.

I want to prepare breakfast with the girls and wait for the men to come from prayer. I want to run into my father's arms like all the other girls and try to envy each other with a more special Eid greeting. Then I want to dress and see people, walk the streets! Enjoy the crowd. Get lost in old Damascus and walk el assa3 (since its the only area open anyway). I want to feel the spirit all around me and I can't and I'm not.

So to those that matter the most to me, to all my loved ones literary round the world; It would be heaven if I could spend this holiday with you. May it be a joyful blessed time for all of us. Eid Mubarak :)

Inshallah you'll see them soon.
But poor you! I don't think you guys in the US enjoy the Eid spirit like we do. This is because many Americans are non-muslims.

Eid Mubarak!
